A Little Bit of Earth

When I was 11, I told my dad that I wanted a "bit of earth."

You see, I had recently read The Secret Garden, and I was also a huge dork.

My dad patiently planted a little garden with me, and I proceeded to neglect it for most of the summer. Luckily, my dad has the greenest thumb of anyone I know, so my little garden produced veggies and flowers for years to come.

Fast forward, 15 years, and my dad helped me plant another little garden, this time behind my duplex.

I have not neglected it all.

(Unless you count a couple days when I forgot to water it....)

  1. Hahaha, I knew what this was about from the title. I loved that movie as a kid. That's why I tried a garden when I was a kid, but it failed.

  2. The closest to a garden we've come is a Topsy-turvy. Yay for yours!

  3. Lauren, I love that we were both inspired by "The Secret Garden"!

    And, thanks Abbie! :)

  4. Ok so this has nothing to do with the actual garden but it was my favorite book in 4th grade so I did my book report on it. But then my evil teacher decided we had to give an oral report too and the book has a character named Dickon! Dude, in 4th grade, I did NOT want to say that name in front of my whole class, ya know? So I faked sick and went home to avoid the whole thing.

    But yay for your garden!

and of course I now blame you for the song that is now stuck in my head . . .

"Inch by inch, row by row. Gonna make this garden grow . . ."

  6. Shannon, I pretty much love that story. In fifth grade, we read "Where the Red Fern Grows" out loud, and the word "hell" was on my page. I hesitated and said "heck" instead.

Mollie, I had never heard that song before! Now, it is stuck in my head.
