We put a bid in on a house, and we have been waiting to hear back for approximately a thousand years now.

It is like waiting for a cute boy to call, except instead of obsessively checking some boy's Facebook, I am obsessively checking realtor.com.

This is the same house that we put a bid on a couple weeks ago, only to be told that another bidder had gotten there first. Then, we got a call that the other bidder's financing had fallen through!

To quote Grizz from 30 Rock, "It's like a roller coaster ride of emotion in here."

Anyone have a great story about how it took them a long time to get into a new house, but then it turned out perfectly and they lived happily ever after? Anyone?

Three Things

1. Remember that time I didn't blog for a whole month? It was, well, the whole last month. The combination of school, work and grad school has me running around like a crazy person.

(And the fact that one of my grad classes is a history course with approximately 13 million pages of reading each week? Not really helping.)

2. We have officially begun house hunting! It is all very grown-up and scary, and the words "30-year fixed mortgage" have become a part of our daily conversations.

3. I very much want this purple dress from Old Navy to come hang out in my closet and maybe take me out to dinner every once and a while.

Oh, this shampoo and conditioner.

They smell amazing.

Seriously, ah-ma-zing.

And they are pretty earthy-crunchy with no silicones or parabens or dyes.

The shampoo feels like most other shampoos, but the conditioner is definitely lacking in something. It works just fine, but it doesn't have that sleek feeling that I like in a conditioner. (I'm pretty sure that sleek feeling is the magic of silicones).

Also, the conditioner doesn't do much for my already frizzy hair.

Still, the smell totally makes up for it, and I am obsessed with how good my hair smells right now.

If you run into me, and you want to smell my hair, I'm totally cool with that.

A Love Story

There I was, in the Banana Republic Outlet, minding my own business, when Beth said, "Look at this dress!"

And, right there on the spot, I fell madly, deeply in dress-love with this ruffly little black dress with tiny grey deer on it.

I tried to resist its charms-- and its higher-than-I-wanted-to-pay price tag, but Beth and I ultimately decided I would be kicking myself later if I just left it there on the hanger.

So, it came home with me, and we made a date to attend my cousin's wedding together. (Mr. Kinne tagged along, too).

My fabulous little deer dress was the perfect date, and we will definitely be going out together more in the near future.

Keeping My Head Up

Here's the thing.

I won't say that the ocean cured me of my heartache.

But a few days by the water and one amazing lobster roll really did help.

(I wish I had a picture of this miraculous lobster roll, but I was too busy eating it)

I won't lie-- we are still struggling a little bit here at the Kinne house.

Mr. Kinne's job situation is very much up in the air. He was working as a building substitute at the same school for a few years, and he got passed over for a history position that opened up. (He is a total history nerd, and he would have been amazing at that job.) I keep reminding him that he will end up right where he is supposed to be-- but that doesn't make the job search any less frustrating.

I am (still) not knocked up, but I've been to a couple doctor's offices recently where we have started looking into why exactly that might be. I actually had to put off a procedure because the only available appointment was during our trip to the Cape. (I am starting to feel like infertility could really get in the way of living life if you let it!)

But, the hardest thing for me is that, a couple weeks ago, my dad moved clear across the country. To be honest, it is kind of the worst. My dad is one of my very favorite people on the planet, and I would like him to be on the same part of the planet as me.

(This is my dad in 1972, driving cross-country and generally being awesome).

I respect his reasons for leaving, and I think this could be really good for him. But, completely selfishly, I am going to miss having him around.

Still, I am trying my very best to remain positive, especially because life is full of so many wonderful things.

For example, I am going to be moving into a classroom with a Smartboard in just a few weeks. (My very own Smartboard!)

And, there is still such a thing as Nutella in the world.

So, things aren't all bad, are they?

Well, it has been an emotionally exhausting few weeks. People we love have had to deal with heartbreaking loss, and we had to say a very difficult goodbye.

I love lipgloss.

I mean, I have three or four in my purse at all times.

But, this Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss will not be added to my purse collection. It is a little too frosted, and the texture is a little too much like lipstick.

It looks like the kind of lipgloss that Barbie would wear.

And, I always thought of myself as more of a Midge.

However, if it is also a million degrees where you are, I can understand your reluctance to turn on your actual oven.

The knot itself isn't anything to write home about, but when you add the garlic topping? Something miraculous happens.

I wore this lovely yellow nail polish to one of my recent doctor's appointment, and I had the following exchange with my very nice doctor...

Dr.: Um, are your nails always that color? Or...

Me: Oh, no, this is nail polish.

Dr.: Oh, good! Because I was worried...

Me: Oh my gosh, no, they're supposed to be that color.

Dr.: That's... cool.

(I don't think she really thought they were cool.)

(I checked sephora.com, and it appears that this color is no longer available. That is sad, because everyone should have a nail polish that matches Barney)

Well, Hello Again

Well, I'm not sure where these last few weeks have disappeared to.

I have been a busy bee, with the end of the school year and the end of the semester of grad school and the start of summer school.

On top of that, we have been dealing with some challenges both emotionally and financially. I have been in and out of doctors' offices over these last few weeks, and Mr. Kinne's job situation for the fall is a bit up in the air. If you have any extra good thoughts, please send them toward the Kinne house. (Thanks so much.)

But, it is not all doom and gloom, I promise! We have been having plenty of fun now that summer has arrived in New England.

Like, for instance, when we saw Mr. James Taylor himself at Tanglewood. We got to sit around a picnic blanket with some of our favorite people and drink riesling and eat caprese salad. It was fabulous-- and exactly what we needed.

Also looking fabulous is my garden this year. I have eggplant and tomatoes and lettuce sprouting. And today when I went to check? There were honest-to-goodness green beans!

I am in love with my little garden.

I am also in love with Downton Abbey which I just finished watching instantly on Netflix. It is a sweet and dramatic and gossipy, and you should probably start watching it if you haven't already.

Plus, our cat? His furry orange face is still providing us with non-stop entertainment.

The last week has been strange, in the wake of the tornado that touched down in our area. We are working on healing and rebuilding, and I have been overwhelmed by the way the teachers in my building have just surrounded our kiddos with love.

It has been so humid, and I have been walking around with a halo of frizz.

Our area of Massachusetts was hit by tornados on Wednesday, and the aftermath has been devastating for many people. Our friends and family are doing just fine, but many of my students live in the worst-hit areas.

Here was the thought process I went through in picking this mascara.

"Well, I like the one in the orange tube..."

Yep, that was pretty much it.

But, it turns out the mascara in the purple tube makes my lashes look sort of wimpy. It makes them a little longer, but they stay super skinny.

Next time, I might try the pink tube.

I recently discovered that I am going to be an aunt again-- this time on the other side of the family! (Yay!)

As soon as I heard the news, I knew what I wanted to create: a Pregnancy Survival Kit. (I have to admit that I stole the idea from a creative co-worker of mine).

I am not sure what anyone did before Google. How did we find out the name of that one guy on that one episode of Law and Order? How did we find the phone number of that place we wanted to call? (O.k., I know the answer to that one. But, Google is so much awesomer than the Yellow Pages).

Glee

I am in love with this show, and I listen to the soundtracks in the car all the time. Yes, it can be campy and ridiculous, but it is also incredibly touching and funny. (I regularly announce, "I love Kurt's dad!" in our living room).

Gardening

Admittedly, I am not a fan of weeding or bugs or remembering to water my plants. But, I am a huge fan of nurturing something and watching it grow.

Husbands

I am stealing this one from Shannon, because I feel really lucky to have Mr. Kinne around. Sometimes, when I'm feeling really insecure, I turn to him and say, "Will you say something nice about me?" And, he always manages to come up with something that makes me feel better.

How I Met Your Mother

Mr. Kinne and I quote this show all of the time, and it is also where Barney got his name. Plus, "Let's Go to the Mall" is one of the funniest things that ever happened.

Hello Kitty

I have been a fan of Hello Kitty since I was really tiny. I am still a sucker that little face and that little bow.

Strawberry Pop Tarts are the benchmark to which I compare all other unhealthy foods.

Like, if I look at the nutrition facts on something that has fewer than 16 grams of sugar, I will think, "Well, that's less sugar than a Strawberry Frosted Pop Tart."

(Sixteen grams of sugar! In one pop tart! And who eats one Pop Tart?)

But, you see, I super love Strawberry Frosted Pop Tarts.

And, that's why Special K Fruit Crisps are the best thing I've discovered in the grocery store lately. They taste like a slightly crunchier version of a Pop Tart, and they are not so bad for you.

(Seven grams of sugar for two... and, well, that's way less sugar than a Strawberry Frosted Pop Tart).

Homemade Peanut Butter Cups: Take 1

Peanut butter cups are one of the greatest loves of my life-- right up there with Mr. Kinne and dark wash jeans from Banana Republic.

So, it's surprising that I waited until this point in my life to make my own.

I tried this recipe from Rachael Ray, and they were pretty delicious, but they taste a little too much like honey. I've seen other recipes with powdered sugar instead of honey, and those are next on my to-make list.

I'll keep you updated.

What did I do before Facebook? I cannot remember a time when I didn't spend hours posting pictures and updating my status and stalking people I used to go to high school with.

As soon as I saw this hair tutorial on A Cup of Jo, I knew I had to try it out. I wear my hair in a bun almost every single day, because, well, it is the quickest way I know to do my hair. It turns out making three buns? It really only takes a couple more minutes.

Admittedly, I used hair ties instead of bobby pins, but I think the the result is pretty cute.

However, not as cute as my baby nephew.

Because that kid is flipping adorable.

I shouldn't really review perfume, because I know so very little about it.

But, I know a lot about cuteness, because I work with first-graders and I spend a lot of time watching kitten videos on YouTube.

So, I can vouch for the cuteness of this tiny sample bottle I got when I checked out at Sephora.

And, I can say that this perfume smells more "grown-up" than I expected a Hello Kitty perfume to smell.

It smells flower-y and a little bit vanilla-y. Lovely, really.

I am not anti-puppy by any means, but there is something about a slow, lumbering dog who flops down next to you with big, soulful eyes and old-dog sigh. That is my favorite kind of dog.

In college, my friend and I used to go on Krispy Kreme road trips and circle the store until the red light came on. I cannot resist a doughnut-- unless it is a filled doughnut, because those gross me out.

I don't usually re-read books, but I have read Me Talk Pretty One Day more times than I can count. His books make me laugh out loud in public places.

It is my new favorite mascara, and it is less than 7 dollars at Target. The "very black" shade is a great, deep black, and it really defines your lashes. Admittedly, it doesn't give you dramatic lashes, but it does give you perfect-for-work lashes.

And, as a bonus, it comes in this space-age orange tube.

Once, a co-worker spotted a super cute baby and announced, "I think my uterus just skipped a beat!"

I totally get that, because I cannot see a little one without falling a little bit in love. (Also, this happened more than five years ago, and it is still one of the funniest things I've ever heard).

Banana bread
I whole-heartedly approve of cake that can be eaten for breakfast.

Barney
We got Barney almost two years ago on Valentine's Day, and I can't seem to remember a time when I didn't have his furry little face in my life.

Barnes and Noble
I am a total book nerd, and I love nothing better than having a new book to read. Also, this is where Mr. Kinne and I met, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Folar

I am so in love with bread.

Just plain old homemade white bread ranks very high on my favorite food list.

But, wouldn't bread be so much awesomer if it had bacon rolled up in it?

The answer is a resounding "yes!"-- except from the vegetarians, I suppose.

Well, we can thank the Portuguese, because they came up with folar, which is a bread with bacon and linguica rolled into the dough. (Linguica is a sausage, sort of like a milder chorizo).

(I would also like to note that I grew up pronouncing "folar" as "foo-laud," but there's a distinct chance I say it wrong).

Now, I grew up on traditional folar, which has a heavy egg-bread as a base, but I tend to make it more like my not-at-all-Portuguese Dad who uses a soft white bread.

Would you like the recipe? O.K...

Folar (Adapted from the "Soft as Wonder" White Bread Recipe on Allrecipes)

1 1/2 cups water
3 teaspoons salt
9 tablespoons butter, chopped into little pieces
3 tablespoons honey
9 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups milk
6 teaspoons sugar
4 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
1 package of bacon, cooked and chopped into little pieces.
1 packaged of linguica, cooked and chopped into little pieces.
Extra flour to coat the meat

1. Put all of the ingredients in your mixer, and mix together with a dough hook.
2. Let the dough rise, covered, in a warm place for an hour or two. (Look for the dough to double in size).
3. Separate into 4 balls of dough.
4. Roll out each dough into a rectangle.
5. Coat the bacon and the chourica in flour. (I mix the meat with a handful of flour in a bowl until it looks coated).
6. Sprinkle about a fourth of the meat over each rectangle.
7. Roll each rectangle up like a jelly roll.
8. Place each loaf on a baking sheet-- or in a loaf pan.
9. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. (Look for the loaves to brown on top).

10. Enjoy, and pretend like you're not eating some of the unhealthiest foods available all squished together.

Back to School

Well, I was back to school in more ways than one this week.

I was back with my kiddos, which was pretty exhausting. We did some fun projects-- like making oobleck!-- and we also had a couple classroom meetings for a little refresher on the rules.

I will admit that, at one point this week, I found myself yelling to a student, "We do not yell in Room Four!"

The irony was not lost on me.

And! And this week, I started graduate school!

I definitely had first-day-of-school jitters, but everything went pretty smoothly. I am taking two classes-- both night classes that last for three-and-a-half-hours.

(That is, in my opinion, too many hours).

My biggest challenge will be packing enough food to last me from 8 in the morning until 9 at night.

Oh, you know, that and the pile of homework on top of my school work on top of the dishes that I vowed to wash everysinglenight.

Wish me luck.

Hello New Year!

I rang in the New Year in the most laid-back way possible-- with good friends and Little Debbie cupcakes and champagne in a can.

(It was fabulous.)

And, now, I am looking forward to this year with one resolution and a lot of hopes.

My one resolution?

To do the dishes every day.

Because, you see, I am not the best housekeeper, and we run out of clean forks on a regular basis.

But, my hopes are a lot bigger than my one resolution.

This year will be the year that I start taking graduate classes. I do not deal well with change, and I am a little terrified of this new endeavor. I'm scared of how hard it will be to balance work and school, and I'm scared of not being able to pay for school and the rest of life.

But, I hope that I can balance everything.

I also hope for a better job for Mr. Kinne.

I hope for healing for people that I love.

I hope that this will be the year that we're able to conceive. (I was also hoping for this in 2010, but the Universe didn't think we were ready yet).

And, lastly, I hope so many good things for you, because we could all use a little more of the good stuff.

Odds and Ends

Today was the first day in a while that I had absolutely nothing to do.

(We will ignore the fact that my living room floor is littered with wrapping paper, because I probably should do something about that).

Today, I got to stay in my Hello Kitty pajama pants and do some online browsing and catch up on General Hospital.

Now, I haven't found anything in my browsing that I can't live without, but there are a few things I'm considering.

There was a secret pre-sale this weekend, but I resisted because it is the season for giving.

The Navajo Cardigan

Have I Mentioned I Love Mo Willems?

Let me tell you guys the coolest thing.

Yesterday, Mo Willems came to our school, and I got to read a book on stage with him.

My life is complete.

I knew that Mo was coming to our school for a visit, but I had no idea that I would get called up to help him read the literary classic There is a Bird on Your Head. (Apparently, my principal was aware of the fact that he is my very favorite author, so she gave him my name). I went up with two kiddos from school, and I managed to read my part, despite the fact that I was a teeny bit nervous. (I had the very important job of reading the Pelican's lines).

I have never met a more engaging, talented writer, and I have such a book-nerd crush on him.

After the reading, I got the following comments from students in the school:

- Mrs. Kinne, you were great up there!

- You looked really pretty!

- I saw you up there!

- You are good at reading!

- I like your hair!

Make-Up Monday: Tokidoki Pink Lametta Flat Iron

I have let my younger sister straighten my crazy hair a few times, and every time she does I end up flipping my hair around so much that I look like I am doing my best Cher impression.

(I'm sure this is very attractive and doesn't at all make me look like I have adult ADHD).

However, I think I would straighten my hair so much more if I had this adorable Tokidoki straightener.

According to the description on the Sephora site, this is one high-tech device with tourmaline something-or-other and negative ionic something.

But, I am recommending it based solely on its cuteness.

I am not a particularly neat and organized person. (Right now, there are dishes piled up in my sink. And on the counter. And on the stove.)

But, when it comes to Christmas shopping, I am a regular Martha Stewart. I keep a Google Doc open on my computer starting on Black Friday, and I highlight people as I buy their gifts. I also note what I got them, just in case I forget exactly what's in my present stash.

I guess what I'm saying is that buying Christmas presents is one of my favorite things to do. This makes sense, because it combines my love of shopping with my love of holidays that involve cookies.

I am not someone who has a magazine-cover Christmas tree.

Nope, my favorite kind of Christmas tree is a hodge-podge of popsicle sticks and glitter and Hallmark ornaments.

Our little tree has no fewer than 11 Star Wars decorations, 2 "Baby's First Christmas 1983" ornaments and 1 Christmas pickle.

Plus, Tinkerbell is on top.

In other words, it is sort of perfect.

I love the holiday season.

Love the tree and the cookies and the music and the stocking stuffers.

And this Rosebud Salve in a Tube would make a perfect stocking stuffer. It is the loveliest shade of pink when you use it as a lip gloss, and it is super moisturizing.

Plus, it works like magic as a balm on mosquito bites and burns, and it smells like roses.

It is pretty much the handiest thing that you could wrap up in shiny wrapping paper.
